Canna

canna

Family: Cannaceae

Description: Perrenial flower growing up to 1m.

Light: Cannas prefer sun, but will grow in partial shade.

Moisture: The plant prefers moist, sandy and well-drained soil. They can be grown in ordinary garden soils, but will need regular watering, especially in the summer.

Caring: After planting, keep the rhizomes moist but not wet. When new growth appears they can be watered more heavily and tolerate wetter soil. Keeping a layer of mulch on and around the cannas will conserve water and will keep the weeds from growing.

If your cannas are in the ground, do not let them out during the winter. Do not wait until the ground starts to freeze. Leave as much soil around the roots as possible. You will want that soil to be moist, NOT wet. Let sit a few days if too wet. Put the whole root ball (clump) inside a large plastic bag (a large trash bag will be fine). Clear bags are nice so you can see what goes on without having to open. Cover any bare roots or rhizomes with damp peat moss, filling the holes, gaps etc. with the peat. Store them in a cool place, but where the canna roots and rhizomes will not freeze. Again a temperature of around 50F is good.

If your cannas are in pots bring them into the house to a sunny location (southern exposure is best) where they will continue to grow and bloom. Water lightly though the winter months and use a little fertilizer.canna4

Propagation:

1. Division of the root clump as the plant comes into growth in the spring. Each portion must have at least one growing point. Pot up the divisions and grow them on in the greenhouse until they are well established and then plant them out in the summer.

2. Seed - pre-soak for 24 hours in warm water and sow February-March in a warm greenhouse at 20C. Plant the seeds 2-5cm deep in individual pots. The seed usually germinates in 3-9 weeks. Grow the plants on in a greenhouse for at least their first winter. Plant them out into their permanent positions in late spring or early summer.
